The safety of steviol glycosides

Issuing time:2020-06-03 00:02

The international and national food safety authorities have shown that the toxicity of steviol glycosides is low, and will not damage human genes or cause cancer-like humans. It is determined that steviol glycosides are safe. The daily intake of steviol glycosides is 0-4 mg per kg of body weight. Since only a small amount of sweeteners are used in food, normal consumption of foods containing steviol glycosides will not exceed the daily intake of steviol glycosides.

Regulation of steviol glycosides

Based on the positive safety assessments of steviol glycosides by different food safety authorities, the Codex Alimentarius Commission, an international organization responsible for setting food standards, is now formulating regulations on the use of steviol glycosides as sweeteners. So far, steviol glycosides have been approved for use in China, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Australia and New Zealand.
